Learning how to find Etsy keywords for free is one of the highest-leverage skills a new seller can build. Etsy's search engine matches buyer queries against your titles, tags, and attributes, so the right keywords decide whether your listing shows up or stays buried. You do not need a paid tool: Etsy's own search bar, its search data, and a few disciplined methods can build you a keyword list good enough to compete. Here are five free methods, in order of usefulness, with a worked example at the end.

Method 1: Mine Etsy's autocomplete search bar

Etsy's autocomplete suggestions are based on real shopper searches, so this is live demand data, not guesswork. Type your core product word, add a space, and record every suggestion. Then try the classic modifier trick: type your product plus one letter at a time ("mug a", "mug b", "mug c") and Etsy will return long-tail phrases starting with each letter. Add trigger words like "for", "gift", "custom", "personalized", or "birthday" to generate buyer-intent variations.

For example, typing "ceramic mug" might surface: ceramic mug personalized, ceramic mug set of 2, ceramic mug with lid, ceramic mug funny for women. Each is a real phrase shoppers typed. Copy them into a spreadsheet, one per row, and you have a starter keyword list in under 15 minutes.

Method 2: Harvest the "related searches" row

After running a search on Etsy, scroll to the bottom of the results page. The related searches strip shows queries from buyers who started with your term and kept looking. These are high-conversion phrases paid tools often deprioritize because they are niche, but niche is exactly where new sellers win. Clicking through each related search repeats the autocomplete and related-searches cycle, so you can snowball from one seed term into dozens of long-tail phrases.

Method 3: Reverse-engineer top-selling competitors

Find 3 to 5 listings in your niche with strong sales and reviews, then study them like homework. Look at the first 5 to 7 words of their titles (Etsy weights the beginning of the title more), their 13 tags, the categories and attributes they chose, and the words buyers use in reviews. Patterns repeat: phrases that show up across several top sellers in your niche have been tested and work. Do not copy titles word for word, but reuse the proven phrases in your own wording.

Note that Etsy gives you 13 tags, each up to 20 characters. Make every tag a multi-word phrase rather than a single word, and avoid repeating the same word across tags so each one covers new search ground. Mirror your most important phrase in both the title and a tag for the strongest signal.

Method 4: Use Etsy's free Search Analytics

If your shop has listings, you already own a free keyword research tool. In Shop Manager, go to Marketing, then Search Analytics. Etsy shows which keywords are driving traffic to your shop, plus search volume and related terms. Sort by impressions and look for two things: high-impression keywords you do not currently rank for (new listing opportunities), and keywords where your listing sits on page 2 or 3 (optimization opportunities). Sellers with enough ad or organic data get the most value here, but even a young shop can spot its first winning phrases.

Method 5: Use the free tiers of dedicated tools

When you outgrow manual methods, eRank offers a genuinely free plan with keyword search data and listing audits, which is enough for most beginners. Marmalead and EtsyHunt also offer limited free access or trials if you want search volume and competition scores. Paid plans (roughly $6 to $19 per month) add historical data and competitor tracking, but start free and upgrade only when keyword research is actually bottlenecking your listings.

Worked example: from "mug" to 10 ranking phrases

Start with the seed "dog mom mug". Autocomplete and related searches add: dog mom mug personalized, funny dog mom mug, dog mom coffee mug, dog mom gift, dog mom mug with name. Modifier expansion adds: personalized dog mom birthday mug, dog mom mug for Christmas, funny dog mom travel mug. Competitor review mining adds the phrase buyers actually type: dog mom coffee cup. In about 20 minutes you have 10 long-tail phrases, each with real demand evidence behind it. Each is accurate to your product and specific enough to dodge the millions of listings fighting over "mug".

How many tags should you use on Etsy?

All 13, every time. An unused tag slot is an unused chance to match a search query. Keep each tag under the 20-character limit, phrase-style, and skip filler words Etsy ignores. Once your phrases are drafted, validate them with our free Etsy title checker: paste your title and see whether your keywords sit in the high-weight opening words, whether you are repeating words that could have covered new searches, and whether your title stays under the 140-character limit. Keyword research finds the words; the checker makes sure your listing actually uses them where they count.

Etsy's tag limits and search features change over time. Confirm the current rules (13 tags, 20 characters per tag, 140-character title limit) in the Etsy Seller Handbook before finalizing listings.
