What is the right print on demand image size? For apparel, start with 4500 x 5400 pixels at 300 DPI. That file covers the largest common print area, exports sharp on every major POD platform, and lets you scale down to mugs, totes, and posters without ever scaling up. Here is the full setup: dimensions, DPI, format, and the mistakes that turn good designs into blurry prints.
Print on demand image size by product
Pixel dimensions are what matter. DPI is a density setting, and a file's physical print size is pixels divided by DPI. Build at the largest size you will print, because shrinking is safe and stretching is not.
- T-shirt full front (15 x 18 in): 4500 x 5400 px at 300 DPI
- T-shirt front (12 x 16 in): 3600 x 4800 px
- Hoodie front (12 x 14 in): 3600 x 4200 px
- Pocket print (4 x 4 in): 1200 x 1200 px
- Tote bag (10 x 12 in): 3000 x 3600 px
- Mug wrap (8 x 3.5 in): 2400 x 1050 px
- Poster (12 x 18 in): 3600 x 5400 px
- Phone case (3 x 6 in): 900 x 1800 px
One master file at 4500 x 5400 covers nearly all of these. Export smaller variants per product rather than keeping separate originals.
DPI explained: the number everyone misunderstands
300 DPI is the industry standard for POD products customers inspect up close: apparel, mugs, notebooks, and art prints. For large-format pieces viewed from farther away, 150 DPI is acceptable. Printful requires a minimum of 150 DPI and prefers 300, while Printify asks for 300 DPI at print size.
The critical misunderstanding: changing the DPI field on a small image from 72 to 300 does not add any detail. A 1000 x 1000 px image set to 300 DPI simply prints smaller (about 3.3 x 3.3 inches), it does not print sharper. If your design looks fine on screen but prints blurry, you almost certainly have too few pixels, not the wrong DPI setting. Fix it with a larger original, careful resampling, or an AI upscaler, not the DPI dropdown.
A worked example: is your AI-generated design big enough?
AI generators typically export 1024 x 1024 px. At 300 DPI that prints at roughly 3.4 x 3.4 inches, a pocket-print size at best. For a full-front tee design (12 x 16 in at 300 DPI) you need 3600 x 4800 px, about 12 times the pixels. This is exactly why sellers upscale AI art before uploading to Printful or Printify: the design is fine, it is just undersized.
File format and color rules
- Transparent PNG for garments. A white background prints as a white box on a dark shirt. Export with transparency and check the edges for a pale halo from sloppy cutouts.
- Never use transparency for marketplace listing images. Etsy renders transparent PNGs as solid black. Your design file and your listing image have opposite requirements, so flatten listing mockups to JPG.
- Design in sRGB, expect CMYK. POD systems work in sRGB, and neon screen colors have no CMYK equivalent, so they print duller than your monitor shows.
- Watch file size limits. Printful caps uploads at 200 MB, and enormous files upload slowly without looking any better.
Sizing for different print placements
Not every design should be the same size on the garment. A standard front print is around 10 to 12 inches wide on adult tees, left chest prints are typically 3.5 to 4.5 inches wide, and oversized statement prints can run 14 to 16 inches. Design your art at full size, then place a scaled copy in your provider's mockup tool to check placement before ordering samples. A 4500 x 5400 master shrinks cleanly to a left chest logo at 1200 px wide, and because you are downscaling, the print stays sharp.
Three mistakes that ruin POD prints
Starting from a 72 DPI web image and hoping the DPI setting fixes it. It does not. Ignoring the transparent background rule and shipping designs with white boxes on colored garments. And designing at the display size instead of the print size, which forces you to upscale everything later. Build big once, export small forever.
Prep your listing images while you are at it
Your design file and your Etsy listing photos are two different files with two different rulebooks. Resize your listing mockups and lifestyle photos to Etsy's 2000px standard with our free Etsy image resizer, which processes up to 20 images at once right in your browser. Design for the press, size for the marketplace, and both jobs get done in minutes.
Each POD provider publishes its own file requirements and updates them periodically. Confirm the current specs in your provider's help center before a large catalog upload.
